Rates rebates

A rates rebate is a partial refund on your combined Regional Council and city/district Council rates of up to $665 per year (as at 2021). Ratepayers are only eligible for one rebate per rating year.

Whether or not you are eligible for a rebate will depend on:

  • Your income
  • The amount of the rates you are charged
  • The number of dependents you have

Find out if you’re eligible.

Visit Getting a rates rebate and download the forms required to apply for a rates rebate. You may also need to supply other information to support your application.

You should then return the application to your city or district council who will process the application.

A rates rebate is credited to your rates account and is non-refundable, unless you have already paid your rates in full. If this is the case, it will be credited to your account.

If you meet the criteria, you will only be entitled to one rates rebate per rating year – no matter how many properties you own and where those properties are. This means if you have properties in more than one rating area (for example in Tauranga and in Rotorua) you will only be able to apply for one rates rebate.

Rates remissions

A rates remission is a discount on the rates you owe – your rates pay be partially reduced or waived, depending on the type of remission.

Types of remissions 2022 – 2023

There are a wide-range of remissions, which can all be found in our Remission and Postponement of Rates Policy (PDF 267.09KB)  (PDF 267.09KB) .

The Remission and Postponement of Rates policy is being reviewed in 2022 as part of the annual plan. Have your say on Participate BOPRC.
