Rates rebates

A rates rebate is a partial refund on your combined Regional Council and city/district Council rates of up to $700 per year (as at 2022). Ratepayers are only eligible for one rebate per rating year.

Please note - you will need to apply for your rates rebate through your local council as we do not process applications directly.

Whether or not you are eligible for a rebate will depend on:

  • Your income
  • The amount of the rates you are charged
  • The number of dependents you have

Find out if you’re eligible.

Visit Getting a rates rebate and download the forms required to apply for a rates rebate. You may also need to supply other information to support your application.

You should then return the application to your city or district council who will process the application.

A rates rebate is credited to your rates account and is non-refundable, unless you have already paid your rates in full. If this is the case, it will be credited to your account.

If you meet the criteria, you will only be entitled to one rates rebate per rating year – no matter how many properties you own and where those properties are. This means if you have properties in more than one rating area (for example in Tauranga and in Rotorua) you will only be able to apply for one rates rebate.

Rates remissions

A rates remission is a discount on the rates you owe – your rates may be partially reduced or waived, depending on the type of remission. There are no changes to the types of remissions available in the rates year 1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023, so your city or district council will have a list of remissions available on their website.

Types of remissions

There are a wide-range of remissions, which can all be found in our Remission and Postponement of Rates Policy.
