Ōhau Wall construction trials will affect boat ramp access

The next stage of construction trials to repair the Ōhau Wall is set to begin in mid-September, with temporary impacts on access to the Ōhau Delta boat ramps.

The trials are testing two repair methods on sections of the wall. The first trial has now been completed, involving installation of a medium-term repair treatment across two sections of the wall. The second trial will test a long-term repair option and is scheduled to run from mid-September through to mid-December.

Contractors will aim to keep one of the Ōhau Delta boat ramps open wherever possible and maintain parking access at the site. However, there will be periods when the full construction area is required, making boat launching temporarily unavailable.

The first planned closure period will run from 21 September until 25 September. Boaties and fishers will need to use alternative launching facilities at Okawa Bay or Ōtaramarae.

Contractors are working to minimise disruption and intend to have the boat ramp and parking area available again by 1 October, ahead of the opening of the trout fishing season.

People using the area are asked to follow all signage and directions from contractors while work is underway.

These works are part of the wider investigation currently being undertaken by the Regional Council into the future of the Ōhau Wall. Findings from the trials will be available in early 2027 and considered alongside other scientific, engineering, and economic assessments to help inform future decisions for the Ōhau Wall.
