Baybus OnDemand changing the way we travel
The Baybus OnDemand trial is proving to be popular in Tauranga South, since its launch in March 2024. With more than 35,000 trips completed and 145,000 kilometres covered, this innovative service is clearly hitting the mark for Tauranga locals. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with 93% of people giving the service a 5-star rating.
A key part of the service’s appeal is its flexibility. Using smart technology, Baybus OnDemand matches ride requests with other passengers travelling in the same direction, creating efficient routes in real-time. With more than 1,600 virtual stops across the area, passengers can be picked up and dropped off closer to their destinations, making public transport more convenient for everyone – including those with mobility challenges.
For some passengers, the on-demand service has made a significant difference in their lives, providing much-needed independence and social connection. One customer described it as “a fantastic service that has allowed our family to access more things, like taking my son to swimming lessons.” Another shared, “this service has changed my life for the better. It’s opened up so many more options in my life.”
Tauranga South was selected for the trial due to its large and densely populated area that includes hospitals and shopping centres, like Fraser Cove and Tauranga Crossing. The corner-to-corner approach of the on-demand model allows for more spontaneity in peoples travel and has also opened up better connections to the wider public transport network in the city.
How to book
Booking a ride is accessible and easy, with options to book via the Baybus OnDemand app, over the phone, or in person using the Book on Behalf service. Once booked, an electric minivan will pick you up from the closest virtual stop, making stops along the way to your destination to pick up and drop off other passengers.
Fares
Baybus OnDemand is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to travel. Fares are $5 for a standard trip, or $4 with a Bee Card.
These fares were updated in April 2025 as part of the trial’s next phase, which includes testing different pricing settings to help assess how flexible services like this could be delivered sustainably in the future.
The Baybus OnDemand trial is running until September 2025. For more information, visit baybus.co.nz/ondemand.
