The following application for resource consent has been received by Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

Nature of Application

The Applicant has applied for resource consents to take surface water from the Waipapa River for the purposes of a micro-hydro electricity generation scheme, and to undertake associated works in the bed of the river.

The location of the activity is 619A Esdaile Road, Tauranga 3180, which is approximately 7.5 kilometres west of Te Puna.

The activity involves installing above ground pipes on the applicant’s side of the river to divert water through a generator prior to returning the water to the river bed.  The intake channel will be located at the top of a small waterfall, and the return point will be below the waterfall and approximately 30 to 60 metres from the intake.

The proposed take from the river is 78 litres per second, and 6,739 cubic metres per day.  A take of 78 litres per second is expected to divert 50 percent of the estimated summer low flow of 155 litres per second.


The legal description of the site is Lot 5 DP372163, BLK IX AONGATETE SD and the site is located at or about map reference NZMS NZTM 1862726.73E, 5823975.87N.
