Progress results for Bay of Plenty Regional Council's Eastern Bay of Plenty general constituency seat by-election are now available.

With approximately 90% of votes counted, Victor Luca is the leading candidate, with final results expected Monday.

Chief Executive Fiona McTavish has given her congratulations to Mr Luca, a former mayor of the Whakatāne District.

"Victor brings valuable local government experience to the role, and we look forward to working with him. It’s also encouraging to see voters engaging in the democratic process and having their say on who will represent the Eastern Bay of Plenty community."

She thanked all candidates for putting their names forward to be considered for the role during a time where significant change to local government in New Zealand is being worked through.

Today's progress results are based upon the counting of approximately 90% of the returned voting papers. They do not include special votes and voting papers returned today that are still in transit to the processing centre.
