Geotechnical investigations will be carried out on a section of the town centre flood defence system nearby the Yacht Club tomorrow (Tuesday 7 July). The work involves a crane lifting a drilling rig into position to take bore samples.
Similar work will take place on Wednesday and Thursday (8 & 9 July) on the stopbank at the wharf end of Quay Street.
These geotech investigations will help Bay of Plenty Regional Council engineers to better understand the material in these locations as they plan how to remedy long-standing seepage issues that have occurred in Quay Street in times of high river levels.
In both cases, pedestrian access along those sections of the Warren Cole Walkway will be closed and managed diversions will be in place for pedestrians throughout the work period.
There will be temporary road closures on Quay Street from 6.30am – 9.00am Wednesday and 3.00pm – 5.00pm on Thursday to relocate the drilling equipment.
Traffic management personnel will be onsite for both road closures, to allow access for service and emergency vehicles, should these be required.
