All rivers in the area, with the exception of the lower reaches of the Whakatane, have peaked and are now receding and as predicted, river levels have not affected properties within flood protected schemes.

As a precaution, in preparation for high tide at Whakatane and the anticipated peak of the river at 11am, Operations Team members have installed stop logs at the boat ramp and Sport Fishing Club.

Duty Flood Manager Mark Townsend says the procedures in place under the Lake Matahina Management Plan with TrustPower have worked as intended, with the dam operators continuing to spill water in preparation for the peak of the Rangitaiki River due around 8am (Friday 5 July).

Metservice has now lifted its heavy rain warnings for the area, but Bay of Plenty Regional Council Flood Room remains activated and updates to the current situation will be shared on the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Facebook page and website boprc.govt.nz.
