BAY OF PLENTY REGIONAL COUNCIL TOI MOANA

Community Groups and Iwi Engagement

Community input to the future of water in your area

We’ve set up three Freshwater Futures Community Groups in  the Water Management Areas of Rangitāiki, Kaituna/Maketū and Pongakawa/Waitahanui catchments to help us make some important decisions about water management.

Through a series of workshops held over several years, they're informing the development of changes to the Regional Water and Land Plan that will improve the way water quality and quantity is managed in their local catchments.

They're helping us to:

  • Identify local community values for freshwater
  • Set local limits for water quality and quantity
  • Develop solutions for managing water in their catchment.

Group members are local people that have a close relationship with and understand the water sources in their areas. They bring a wide range of perspectives to the table including those of Maori, industry (including farmers, foresters and horticulturalists), business organisations, local interest groups, including environmental groups, local residents, food gatherers, young people and people who use water for recreation.

Wider public and stakeholder consultation on draft plan changes will start in 2018. We'll be rolling out similar work in other parts of the region in the coming years.
