Mangrove seedling mower hovercraft

Regional Council has commissioned an innovative new solution to reducing mangrove spread in Tauranga Harbour.

Auckland-based company Fieldmaster designed the solution which is a purpose-built hovercraft fitted with a mangrove seedling mowing unit. It’s the first of its kind in New Zealand and has been designed to have minimal impact on the estuary bed and other wildlife.

Regular hovercraft operations are expected to start from March 2017. It will be operated by trained pilots in 11 of Tauranga Harbour’s estuaries, removing up to 600 hectares of mangrove seedlings from consented areas each year.
