New express bus service for Te Puke residents to meet peak demand

Friday, 24 February 2017 12:00 p.m.

A new weekday express bus service will start from Monday 27 February to cater for an increased demand for public transport between Te Puke and Tauranga at peak travel times.

The new look Bay of Plenty Regional Council Public Transport Committee approved adding a new express service to Route 221 at its inaugural meeting last Friday, after hearing some passengers have been unable to board the 7.45am and 5.40pm bus due to overloading.

The Regional Council’s Transport Policy Manager, Garry Maloney says the express service will travel direct from Te Puke to Tauranga return offering an additional morning and afternoon travel option for Te Puke residents.

Mr Maloney says the costs for the additional services will be met in the current budget by reallocating a bus from an under patronised service to run the two new Te Puke express services.

Chair of the Public Transport Committee Councillor Lyall Thurston says the Committee was delighted to approve the recommendation and is reflective of their commitment to being responsive to community needs.

“The new additional Te Puke services is a win-win for all, and we are commitment to working with our transport partners such as the NZ Transport Agency and the local authorities to ensure we continue to meet the needs of Bay of Plenty communities through collaboration and engagement,” says Councillor Thurston.

Mr Maloney says a large number of passengers using Route 221 are tertiary students studying in Tauranga, but living in Te Puke. The new services will continue through to the start of the new Bayhopper contracts in mid 2018.
