Tuesday, 11 October 2011 8:15 p.m.

Media Update 8.15pm

Maritime New Zealand has issued a navigational warning to vessels about the potential for containers to come off  the stricken vessel MV Rena and cause a hazard to passing vessels.

At this stage there have no reports of containers coming off the vessel but given the severe weather conditions and the vessel's movement it remains a possibility. This has been done as a precautionary measure.

The list the vessel has increased since earlier on the dayto 15  degrees to Starboard.

Maritime New Zealand has contingency plans in place should containers be lost from the vessel. It is a possibility that containers may wash ashore.

A weather warning remains in place.
