Tauranga Oil Spill April/May 2015

Key information:

Heavy fuel oil leaked into Tauranga Harbour from a Mobil-owned pipe during a fuel transfer operation on Monday 27 April 2015. Bay of Plenty Regional Council staff responded and deployed booms to contain the spill as soon as they received notification. Clean-up operations and shoreline checks are ongoing.

Oil spots or oiled debris should be reported to the Regional Council’s Pollution Hotline, phone 0800 884 883, or email info@boprc.govt.nz . The general public have been asked to stay away from oil wash-up areas.

Oiled wildlife should be reported to Department of Conservation, phone 0800 362 468 (0800 DOC HOT).

Boat owners are reminded not to clean oil from their boats or gear with any aggressive chemicals as this may cause more contamination. Please contact your marina operator for advice. Mobil has set up two 0800 numbers:

  1. For boat owners wanting advice about cleaning etc. 0800 895 011.
  2. For boat owners wanting to make insurance claims to Mobil  0800 692 524.
