More options to get around Whakatane

Thursday, 29 May 2014 3:00 p.m.

It will soon be even easier to catch the bus in Whakatane – with extensions to the Whakatane to Ohope route due to start next week.

From Tuesday 3 June the route will extend to both The Hub and Awatapu, travelling along the different routes on selected days each week.

The Awatapu extension will operate on Mondays and Wednesdays three times a day, while The Hub extension will operate on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays three times a day.

Bay of Plenty Regional Councillor Lyall Thurston, Chair of the Public Transport Sub-committee, says the extensions to the routes are a result of customer feedback and requests for additional stops around the town.

“The new routes mean we’re now able to cover a larger area of Whakatane, hopefully opening up the options for using public transport to more residents.”

New timetables are being delivered to the Whakatane Information Centre and are available to download from www.baybus.co.nz.

You can also request a timetable be sent to you by emailing transport@boprc.govt.nz or phoning 0800 4 229 28.

Additional information

  • Bay of Plenty Regional Council manages public transport services in the Bay of Plenty. This includes coordinating routes and setting fares. Bus companies are responsible for operating the services.
  • On average 2300 passengers use the Whakatane – Ohope Bus Service each month.
  • The fare for a trip on the service is $3 for an adult, reduced to $2.40 if they hold a Smartride card; and $1.80 for a student concession fare ($1.44 with a Smartride card).
  • The new service extensions are hail and ride, so people should signal the driver to stop along the route.
