Implementing the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management

Public notice for National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2014 (NPSFM) implementation programme

Under the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2014 (NPSFM 2014), Bay of Plenty Regional Council must develop a programme of time-limited stages for implementing the NPSFM 2014. The staged implementation program is not open for submissions.

On 14 December 2015, Council adopted the updated programme for implementing nine Water Management Areas (WMAs) across the region, and agreed to begin this work with the Rangitaiki and Kaituna/Maketū and Pongakawa/Waitahanui Water Management Areas. The order of other WMAs as below is indicative and yet to be confirmed.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Freshwater Management Framework 2015 outlines the general implementation process for each WMA (page 21). The planning documents will go through the full Resource Management Act 1991 plan making process. More detailed outline of the implementation steps and progress for the Rangitāiki and the Kaituna/Maketū and Pongakawa/Waitahanui WMAs is presented below.
