What is a lake structure?

Any structure where some part sits in, under or over the lake is considered a lake structure. Examples include boatsheds, jetties, boat ramps and retaining walls.

Applying for a consent for a new lake structure

A resource consent is required for any activity that affects the environment. Within the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA), section 13 requires resource consent for all structures in, on, under or over the bed of the lake regardless of whether the structures are existing or proposed.

Applying for a replacement consent

As a lake structure owner you are responsible for ensuring your lake structure consent is up-to-date. It is important that you apply for your new consent before it expires.

Fees and charges

Under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA), Bay of Plenty Regional Council is responsible for managing the use of a wide range of natural resources. The costs of administration, monitoring, supervision of resource consents, and monitoring the region's resources are recovered from consent holders under Section 36 of the RMA.
